10 women among 403 in Manus LLG race

TEN women are among 403 candidates that will be contesting the local level government (LLG) elections in Manus.
Provincial election manager Pakop Posangat said yesterday that one woman would be contesting the presidential seat in the Lorengau urban LLG while four will be contesting the councillor’s seat.
He said one woman would be contesting for the councillor’s seat in the Lelemadih/Bupichupeu LLG.
Three women will be contesting the councillor’s seat in Los Negros while one will be vying for the councillor’s seat in Rapatona.
Posangat said they would utilise polling officials from the last National elections with the 21 polling teams comprising 105 officials in the 131 wards.
Most of these officials will be public servants and trained polling officials from the villages.
He said they had received their updated electoral roll from Port Moresby as election awareness and had begun in the province.
Campaigns by intending candidates have begun but were a low key.
Posangat said they requested K650,000 from the Electoral Commission to conduct elections in the province and an additional K230,000 from the Manus provincial administration to cater for police operations, boat hire and fuel logistics.
He said police operations would not be conducted in big scale due to funding constraints and police officers would be placed strategically in polling areas.
