A committee will be established address issue of West Papua

A committee will be established to look specifically into the issue of West Papua.

Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato has been tasked to ensure this is done.

National Capital District Governor, Powes Parkop, who was part of Prime Minister Peter O' Neill's delegation to Indonesia says he is encouraged by the move.

Mr Parkop has been a champion for the West Papua cause and is very happy the issue is now being taken up at the highest level by both the Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian governments.

"I want to ah also for the first time we are putting that agenda on the table, an agenda that's not been raised before so I'm happy with the outcome because not only it was raised and the President of Indonesia mentioned it on two occasions in length."

However Mr Parkop says the West Papua issue is a very complicated issue and needs to be addressed together with Indonesia.

The Committee will among other things look at defining an economic corridor along the PNG/Indonesia border from Wutung to Western Province where joint development of oil and gas and other minerals will take place.

A highway will be built linking West Sepik and Western Province to Merauke and Jayapura in Indonesia.
