Fiji mutiny accused claims set-up

The Fiji High Court has been told by a former Land Force Commander Pita Driti that he felt he was being set up in alleged plot to oust the regime leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
According to Fiji media, Mr Driti, who is being tried on charges of uttering seditious comments and inciting mutiny, says he believes he was set up by Brigadier General Mohammed Aziz.
Mr Driti says another top officer, Ratu Tevita Mara, had told him that the plan was to cancel Commodore Bainimarama’s passport when he went to Sudan in 2010 and not allow him back into Fiji and get the troops from Australia and New Zealand to assist them.
The court had earlier heard that the alleged plot also involved a plan to kill the attorney-general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, by Christmas 2010.
But Mr Driti says Mr Sayed-Khaiyum, who frequently acts as prime minister, was his friend.
Ratu Tevita Mara, who was also charged over the alleged plot, skipped bail and fled to Tonga two years ago.
