PNG man kills wife after row over homebrew

A WOMAN was killed by her husband last weekend in Maprik, East Sepik, police said yesterday.
Maprik police station commander Richard Rafa said the couple from Yeniko village, in the Yamil-Tamaui local level government, argued about homebrew before a fight broke out.
Insp Rafa said the husband had been drinking homebrew over the weekend and on his arrival home on Sunday he argued with his wife.
Rafa said the man was alleged to have kicked his wife on the belly, killing her instantly. The death took place between 10 and 11am on Sunday.
Doctors at Maprik Hospital conducted a post-mortem examination on the woman but the results had not been released.
“The suspect is on the run,” Rafa said. He said police knew who the man was and were calling on him to surrender.
The woman’s relatives retaliated after hearing the news and burnt several houses belonging to the suspect’s relatives. Police identified the deceased as Yambigo Kit, 25, from Yeniko village.
In another incident, a man died in a fight among people from three villages.
Police said the fight erupted over land between people from the Nigalimbi, Elaita and Mamalibi villages, in Bumbita-Muhan, Sunday.
Police have also warned people not to spread rumours.
The warning followed the arrest of a man who had been sending text messages to other people’s mobile phones about an alleged court decision on the by-election for Maprik. The National
