Solomon Islands Man jailed for killing

The young man who has been found guilty of the death of his cousin brother at Burns Creek, East Honiara early this year has been sentenced on Monday to nine and a half years in prison.

This was after Justice Stephen Pallaras reduced the sentence from 11 years imprisonment imposed.

Kelly Iroga, 23, has been found guilty of manslaughter after a one day hearing for one count of murder.

He was therefore acquitted of the murder charge.

Iroga assaulted the deceased who is a 14-year-old boy after accused the deceased of cutting down his tree.

The deceased denied cutting down the accused’s tree but he however slapped the deceased on his face.

He then forcefully pulled the deceased to the ground and kicked him to the back of the neck once while the deceased was on the ground.

The deceased never got up after that kick.

He was taken to the National Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Iroga was also sentenced last month to 12 years imprisonment for a separate offence that occurred in 2011 at Lungga.

This was for an attempted murder and robbery.

Justice Pallaras yesterday ordered that the sentence run consecutive to the 12 years imprisonment.

This means that Iroga will serve the current sentence once he completed the 12 years jail term.

Iroga was represented by Helena Blundell of Public Solicitor’s Office whilst the Crown was represented by State Prosecutor Ricky Iomea.
