NEW Ireland police in Papua New Guinea have reported the suicide of a 52-year-old man who was suspected for committing incest with his daughter, the National reports.
Provincial police commander Elizah Taksir said yesterday the incest incident was reported on Feb 13 to police by elders of the village.
It was alleged that the suspect and deceased identified had committed incest with his 18-year-old daughter and as a result she became pregnant.
The suspect’s wife, the victim’s mother and elders in the community reported the matter to police.
Taksir said the suspect discovered that police would travel to the area to investigate and arrest him and committed suicide.
“After the suspect heard his wife and elders had reported the matter to police, he drank poison from bush ropes used to kill fish,” he said.
Taksir said villagers confirmed this after they discovered a bottle of the poison lying next to his body.
“Police are treating the incident as suicide,” he said.
