Members boycott Guadalcanal meeting in Solomon Islands

Honiara (Solomon Star): NON-EXECUTIVE members of the Guadalcanal Provincial Assembly boycotted the assembly meeting on Wednesday and Thursday.

The action came as the political turmoil within the assembly persisted.

Premier Panga’s leadership was thrown into disarray last week after eight of his executives resigned and call for his removed.

Mr Panga pulled five members from the non-executive bench and sworn them in as ministers but he was still running a minority government.

The mass resignation led to the suspension of the provincial assembly meeting, which was convened at Doma, west Guadalcanal.

The meeting was supposed to resume on Wednesday so that Mr Panga could move the sine die motion, but those from the non-executive bench failed to turn up.

Assembly speaker Abel Arambola said he adjourned the meeting for yesterday but the group, which has 13 members still failed to show up.

“I’ve adjourned the meeting for tomorrow (today) and if the situation happens again, then I’ll have to suspend the meeting for 14 days,” Mr Arambola said.
