THE Waigani Committal Court in Papua New guinea has allowed bail for a man charged with the rape of his seven-year-old daughter for five years from 2005.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar allowed bail after a verbal application from the man from a village in Milne Bay, but added conditions.
Police alleged that between 2005 and 2010 in Port Moresby, the defendant allegedly raped the victim who was seven then. The court heard that there was a relationship of trust since the man was the victim’s father from his first wife.
The court noted that charges would be verified by the prosecution as the defendant was a biological parent of the victim.
The prosecution indicated that the victim was in Grade 10 and was currently in a safe house and requested that the defendant’s bail be allowed with strict conditions.
Bidar told court that it was mere allegations against the man and police would need to investigate it.
The court allowed a K500 bail.
Bidar ordered that the defendant should not interfere with the victim and must report to the registry every Friday until the completion of his case.
