FOUR women were allegedly raped in a home by a group of men, as other occupants including children jumped through a window for safety in Papua New Guinea, The National Newspaper reports. .
The incident on New Year’s Eve at the Port Moresby suburb of Morata has left community leaders and residents disgusted and angry.
The leaders have met to plot how to identify and hand over those involved to police.
It is alleged that more than 20 armed men ― allegedly drunk - forced their way into the house where the women and children were sleeping.
Community leader John Moko said two teenaged girls, a young mother and an old woman, were allegedly attacked in the home. The children and others broke open a window to escape from the men.
The home was looted, Moko said.
Police officers from the Waigani police station sent to investigate were pelted with stones and had to return to their base, according to NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Benjamin Turi. He is waiting for a report from the investigating officers.
“There was a commotion down in Morata and the Waigani police did go down there and the vehicle was stoned. I haven’t received any report on that as yet,” Turi said.
National Capital District-Central police commander Assistant Police Commissioner Sylvester Kalaut is also yet to receive a report on the matter.
Yesterday, some women painted their faces in mud to show their disgust and sadness over the alleged incident.
Moko said the four women were taken to hospital for medical examination.
“More than 20 men armed with sticks and stones entered the house where the women and children were sleeping. Two teenaged girls, a young mother and an elderly woman were attacked,” he said.
Resident Watson Tim said it was not a good start to the new year.
“We are sitting on a time bomb,” he said.
Tim said the community leaders wanted to identify all those involved in the “animalistic action”.
“We are trying to find one or two suspects to lead us to the main culprits,” he said.
The four women are believed to be all from a district in a highlands province.
